Abstract:

Modern aberration-corrected electron microscopes are able to resolve structural features of catalysts at sub-Angstrom resolution. By combining different detectors and spectroscopic tools, atomic-scale information about composition and chemical state can also be delivered. However, such characterizations are generally performed under high vacuum and close to room temperature, the obtained information is therefore related to an equilibrium state that is of limited relevance in cases where understanding the interactions between the active catalyst and the surrounding atmosphere is the aim.

With the development of MEMS-based in situ holder, it is now possible to directly monitor the dynamic behaviors of catalysts under pressure up to 1 bar and temperature close to 1000°C. The accordingly generated insights may further improve our mechanistic understanding of catalytic reactions to a better level.

In this presentation, I will show some of our recent results on structural dynamics of catalysts under redox conditions characterized by in situ electron microscopy. Besides catalysis, I will also show some examples to demonstrate how in situ electron microscopy benefits the research in material science.

Biography:

Dr. Xing Huang is a senior postdoctoral researcher working at Scientific Center for Optical and Electron Microscopy in Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zürich). He received his B.S. in Applied Physics (2008) at Hebei University of Technology, and Ph.D. in Material Science (2013) at Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). For his Ph.D., he was awarded the CAS President Prize for Excellence. Afterwards, He became a postdoctoral researcher in Fritz-Haber Institute of Max Planck Society and Max Planck Society for Chemical Energy Conversion from 2013 to 2018. In 1st of May, 2018, he moved to ETH Zürich to continue his research. The main focus of his research is on in situ electron microscopy characterization of heterogeneous catalysts under relevant conditions to understand their functional mechanisms. He is also interested in understanding the growth and evolution behaviors of nanomaterials by in situ electron microscopy. Up to now, Dr. Xing Huang has published over 80 peer-reviewed papers including Adv. Mater., Adv. Funct. Mater., ACS Nano, J. Mater. Chem. A and so on. Recently, he was nominated as “2018 Emerging Investigators” by J. Mater. Chem. A.
